Mystery Respiratory Illness Affecting Dogs Across Several U.S. States

We’ve got some important news to share about an unusual respiratory illness that’s been cropping up in dogs across multiple states in the U.S. While we don’t have all the answers yet, it’s essential to stay informed and take precautions to keep our furry friends safe.

States like Oregon, Colorado, and New Hampshire have reported cases of this mysterious illness, which has led to lasting respiratory problems and pneumonia in dogs. Watch out for symptoms like coughing, sneezing, nasal or eye discharge, and lethargy in your pets. Some cases progress rapidly, making dogs very sick within just 24 to 36 hours.

According to veterinarians, this illness presents as a harsh, repetitive cough, often worse in the morning and evening or after exercise. Unfortunately, the exact cause remains a mystery, which makes treating it challenging. Antibiotics don’t seem to be effective, and there are no antiviral medications available until we identify the virus responsible.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture has already documented over 200 cases since mid-August and is working diligently with researchers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory to identify the root cause of these illnesses.

While it’s true that some dogs have sadly passed away due to severe forms of the infection, we can’t provide an exact number without a clear definition of the disease or a reliable test.

To help protect your pets, veterinarians suggest keeping them away from other dogs when possible, especially in places like kennels, dog parks, and groomers, where the illness can spread more easily. Ensuring your pets are up-to-date on vaccines, including those that protect against various respiratory illnesses, is also a wise move.

We understand that this situation can be concerning, but don’t panic. Stay vigilant, follow the guidance of your local veterinarians, and let’s hope for a speedy resolution to this mystery illness.
