It all started on a regular Saturday when Grubhub driver Alan Moncayo embarked on a lunch delivery mission to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter’s Lorton, Virginia, campus. Little did he know, this delivery would change his life and the life of one lucky pup forever.
As Moncayo stepped into the shelter, he was met with a pair of soulful eyes peering at him from the front window. It was a moment straight out of a rom-com, folks. The dog in question? None other than Jihoo, a charming 65-pound black-and-white pit bull mix.
“It was love at first sight,” Moncayo recalls, his eyes twinkling with affection. “He looked at me, and I looked back at him.” And guess who else was along for the ride? Moncayo’s adorable 5-year-old daughter, Sabrina, who had been begging for a furry companion for ages.
With his daughter’s puppy dreams dancing in his mind, Moncayo mustered up the courage to ask if they could meet Jihoo. Spoiler alert: it was a match made in doggy heaven. The trio hit it off instantly, bonding over a game of catch that would melt even the coldest of hearts. “It was amazing,” Moncayo gushes. “We hit it off with him right from the very beginning.”
But here’s the twist: Jihoo wasn’t just any shelter dog. He had been patiently awaiting his forever home for a whopping 240 days! Talk about a long wait. Despite being adored by shelter staff and known for his playful antics and affectionate nature, Jihoo hadn’t found his perfect match—until now.
Coinciding with Super Bowl weekend, the shelter was hosting an “Adoption Bowl” event, waving adoption fees for large dogs like Jihoo. And thanks to Moncayo’s lunch delivery detour, Jihoo became one of the lucky 20 pups to find their fur-ever families that weekend.
Rebecca Cavedon, communications manager at the Fairfax County Department of Animal Sheltering, couldn’t contain her excitement. “His adoption is just so special,” she beams. “Bringing people and pets together is really the core of our mission—there’s so much love and joy in adopting a pet.”
And the love didn’t stop there! Moncayo was over the moon when the shelter not only waived the adoption fee but also sent him home with a care package fit for a pampered pooch—complete with a brand new dog crate, leash, toys, and food.
Now, Jihoo is living his best life with his new family, showered with love and affection. “He’s so gentle, loving,” Moncayo raves. “He fits so perfectly in our family. We love him so much, it’s such a blessing to our hearts.”
